Platts reported that Brazilian total imports of carbon sheet steel in 2017 jumped 84.5% year on year to 603,889 tonne from 327,348 tonne in 2016. Data from MDIC, the country''s foreign trade ministry, showed that hot-rolled coil imports last year jumped 49.7% to 122,365 tonne from 81,738 tonne imported a year ago while imports of cold-rolled sheet steel increased 99.9% to 217,950 tonne from 108,997 tonne a year earlier.
Imports of hot-dipped galvanized steel sheet soared 92.9% in 2017 to 263,757 tonne from 136,614 tonne in 2016.
Analyzing only December''s imports, Brazil imported 14,802 tonne, down 60.9% from 37,924 tonne in December 2016. These imports were valued at $9.63 million FOB, down 51.2% from USD 19.76 million FOB in the year-ago period.
Imports of HRC were 1,903 tonne, down 49.3% from 3,755 tonne in December 2016. CRC imports totaled 6,220 tonne, down 69.1% from 20,141 tonne. Volumes of HDG were 6,679 tonne, down 52.4% on year from 14,028 tonne.
