According to statistics from Turkey Customs, the country imported around 25 million tons of ferrous scrap in 2021, rising by 11.4% compared to the previous year. The increase was mainly due to a significant hike in sources from the Baltic countries, Venezuela, and short-sea suppliers.
Among the Baltic countries, Lithuania was the largest source, exporting a total of 1.22 million tons of ferrous scrap to Turkey, up by 23.7% year on year.
Venezuela became a major new scrap supplier for Turkey in 2021. This country exported around 936,200 tons of ferrous scrap to Turkey during the given period, hiking by more than four times year on year.
Turkey’s scrap imports from short-sea suppliers had a jump in 2021, with sources mainly from Ukraine, Libya, Israel, and Bulgaria, whose combined supply had a year-on-year increase of 87.7% to 2.28 million tons during the period.
