Two leading steelmakers have been recognised by General Motors in their annual awards.

Nucor Corporation was named the automaker’s Supplier of the Year and remains the only electric arc furnace steelmaker to receive the award.

ArcelorMittal was recognised with the 2019 Supplier Quality Excellence Award, claiming that ‘only the best suppliers from around the globe were recognised and several ArcelorMittal facilities in North America were among the awardees’.

For Nucor Corporation, this is the second time in a row that the company has been singled out as General Motors’ Supplier of the Year. The company was awarded the prize in a virtual ceremony on 24 June.

Leon Topalian, president and chief executive of Nucor Corporation, commented: "On behalf of Nucor''s 27,000 teammates, I want to thank GM for this award. We value the partnership we''ve built with GM, working together to meet their needs for automotive steel products. We look forward to continuing to grow as partners for years to come."

General Motors’ Supplier of the Year award winners were chosen by a global team of GM purchasing, engineering, quality, manufacturing and logistics executives. Winners were selected based on performance criteria in product purchasing, global purchasing and manufacturing services, customer care and aftersales, and logistics. This is the 28th year GM has honoured suppliers with the Supplier of the Year Award.

ArcelorMittal was recognized with the 2019 Supplier Quality Excellence Award. “Only the best suppliers from around the globe were recognised and several ArcelorMittal facilities in North America were among the awardees,” said the world’s biggest steelmaker.

Three ArcelorMittal facilities were honoured: ArcelorMittal USA’s Indiana Harbor and I/N Tek and Kotefacilities, AM/NS Calvert and ArcelorMittal Dofasco. This marked the third year in a row that AM/NS Calvert has been recognised, and also a second consecutive award for Indiana Harbor, and I/N Tek and I/N Kote.

“We are very proud of our partnership with General Motors across our sites, and this recognition is a testament to our employees’ dedication to superior quality and service,” said John Cardwell, ArcelorMittal’s director of automotive sales. “Winning this award in multiple locations not only bodes well for us now, but also helps position us to remain the market leader with General Motors.”

According to ArcelorMittal, General Motors utilises thousands of suppliers around the world, but only a small fraction receive the Supplier Quality Excellence Award.

“General Motors'' mission is to design, build and sell the world''s best vehicles with the highest levels of quality and safety on the road,” said Richard Demuynck, executive director of GM’s global supplier quality and development. “Achieving this mission depends largely on the quality of the parts our suppliers produce day in and day out.”
