U.S. Steel Corp. has launched its newest sustainable steel product line, verdeX. The company introduced the development at the Ceres Conference 2021.
Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy and Development Officer Richard L. Freuhauf told the panel about the company’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions intensity. He also highlighted major technological advances, producing some of the most advanced high-strength steels at the company’s LEED-certified Big River Steel subsidiary.
“We know that the urgency of the climate crisis requires more from all of us,” U.S. Steel President and CEO David B. Burritt told the conference attendees in a recorded message. “So, we’re changing our portfolio of steelmaking technologies.”
According to the Pittsburgh-based company, the verdeX line will use a quarter of the carbon dioxide emissions previously required in steelmaking. The company, in conjunction with its recently acquired Big River Steel, will deliver the more sustainable product to consumers, the company says.
Additional details about the verdeX line will be revealed in the coming weeks.
