POSCO started its investment plan in magnesium production and smelting in early 2000 because magnesium material was ultralight, higher degree of rigidity and heat conductivity.
However, instead of magnesium alloys, aluminum alloys, super high strength steel sheet were widely applied on smartphone, laptops and car body, meanwhile environmental problems such as soil pollution also troubled the magnesium smelting plant in Okgye became the target of environmental protection group.
POSCO finally decided to pull out of the magnesium business after 13 years of operations.
