Ultraseal International has produced a white paper that will help automotive
manufacturers and their suppliers minimise the problems caused by porosity in
cast metal parts.

Entitled “The Problems of Porosity in Casting and
the Solution through Design and Vacuum Impregnation” it is freely available as a
download on Ultraseal International’s website, see
http://www.ultraseal.co.uk/downloads/technical-papers/

The guide sets out
what porosity is, how it occurs as a natural phenomenon in the diecasting
process, the different types of porosity and how it can be countered, both
through the design of a component part and by vacuum impregnation.

The
vacuum impregnation process is explained, along with the characteristics of
different types of porosity sealant, including modern recycling porosity
sealants such as Ultraseal’s global benchmark recycling sealant Rexeal
100™.

Stephen Hynes, Marketing Director of Ultraseal International, said:
“Porosity is a characteristic of the casting process which can lead to a variety
of problems from “spotting out” of paintwork to the failure of parts that have
to be pressure-tight.

“However it can be controlled and sometimes
eliminated and this is especially important in parts that have to operate under
pressure, for example engine blocks and cylinder heads.

“There are also
some general rules about how to minimise porosity through the design of parts
and we address those in the white paper. It is highly recommended reading for
those in the automotive supply chain.”

Many automotive manufacturers and
suppliers already use vacuum impregnation with porosity sealants as a routine
quality enhancement as they want to avoid costly product recalls or extended
warranty issues as a result of casting porosity.

Parts that undergo
vacuum impregnation include air compressors, cam carriers, cylinder blocks,
cylinder heads, clutch cases, fuel pumps, oil pans, oil sumps, timing chain
covers, transmission cases, turbo chargers and water pumps.

Ultraseal
International has been a leading innovator in the field of vacuum impregnation
sealants and impregnation equipment for decades, being first to market with
recycling impregnation sealants, first to market with modern methacrylate-based
sealants and first to market front loading impregnation equipment.

With
headquarters in Coventry, UK, Ultraseal International has a truly global reach,
having operations in China, India and the United States, an office in Japan and
a network of 22 agents/distributors around the world.
