The Supervisory Board of Saarstahl AG approved the investment in a new continuous casting plant for a total sum of EUR 100 million. The company operates a total of four continuous casting plants at the steelworks. On them the liquid crude steel is poured into so called billets. This starting material is then further processed in the rolling mills. The new, five-stranded system with the abbreviation S1 replaces an existing system. The construction work will begin in the spring of 2018, and commissioning is scheduled for the end of 2019.Saarstahl is investing EUR 100 million in a new continuous caster at Völklingen
Mr Fred Metzken, the spokesman for the investment project said that "This new continuous casting plant is another quantum leap in the technological development of the Saarstahl Group. As a premium manufacturer for wire and rod worldwide, we have the ambition to always be one of the best, which is impressively demonstrated with this investment.
Mr Martin Baues Chief Technology Officer added that "we achieve with the new S1 further improvements in both the quality and dimensions of the products as well as in the production processes. Thanks to the comprehensive computer-assisted monitoring of the processes, a maximum of quality assurance is ensured. As a result, we will be able to produce even more flexible and faster tailor-made steel solutions to our customers in the future. "
Saarstahl was the world''s first steel manufacturer to use the technology of mechanical soft reduction (MSR) in 150 mm x 150 mm casting format. The highly complex MSR technology improves the internal structure of the steel. With the new S1, Saarstahl AG is now further expanding this technical lead: the new plant will be the world''s first plant with MSR in the casting format 180 mm x 180 mm. A reversible cooling bed with a length of approx. 100 meters is also provided for the uniform and distortion-free cooling of the 6 to 13.5 meter long billets.
The system is also equipped with state-of-the-art automation and communication technology. Even during the conception, we have consistently pursued the approaches of Industrie 4.0. This will make it possible to optimally integrate the new plant into the highly complex production processes of the LD steelworks. With this investment, Saarstahl strengthens its position in spring steel (eg chassis and clutch springs), cold wire (eg screws, threaded bolts) and free-cutting steel (eg for valves, injectors); Products which are mainly used in the automotive industry and mechanical engineering.
