The British company Beowulf Mining and its fully-owned Swedish subsidiary Jokkmokk Iron Mines AB hold a project which is close to the World Heritage Site of Laponia in the northern of the country.
However, UN human rights experts requested Sweden not to allow a license for an iron-ore mine in the Gallok region as it is home to the indigenous Sami people. They believed that the mine will create lots of pollution and toxic waste which may harm the protected ecosystem.
The experts said that there is no consultations and it failed to obtain the consent of the Sami. It may be risky to Sami lands, resources, culture, etc. due to the Gallok project.
Sweden enacted a national law on a consultation on January 27, 2022, which asked the government and state administrative authorities to consult representatives of Sami people before any decisions.
The law is not yet in force now. UN exporters asked the Swedish government to respect the indigenous people to recognize their cultural heritage and traditional livelihoods.
