Nippon Steel and Sumitomo Metal Corporation''s Nagoya plant, which was shutdown last week because of a fire, is likely to be up and running again by Friday, according to the Japanese steelmaker.

The Nagoya facilty was built in 1958 and is responsible for the production of 15% of Japan''s total steel output.

Since January 2014 the plant has been plagued with problems ranging from power failures to smoke releases and now there is concern over its safety.

The coke oven where the fire started will not be restarted, but two other coke ovens will be restarted as soon as possible, according to the company.

Nagoya produced 6.74Mt of crude steel during the business year to 31 March and is a big supplier to Japanese car manufacturers including Toyota and Honda.
