Based on preliminary Census Bureau data, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported yesterday that the US imported a total of 2.36Mt (net tons) of steel in September 2026, including 1.64Mt (net tons) of finished steel (down 2.9% and up 1.1% respectively, versus. August 2026).

Total and finished steel imports are down 9.6% and 13.8%, respectively, year-to-date versus 2025. Over the 12-month period October 2025 to September 2026, total and finished steel imports are down 13.4% and 18.5%, respectively when compared with the prior 12-month period. Finished steel import market share was an estimated 18% in August and is estimated at 16% over the first nine months of 2026.

Key steel products with a significant import increase in September compared to August are standard rails (up 187%), tool steel (up 116%), galvanised electrolytic sheets and strip (up 95%) and railroad accessories (up 55%). Products with a significant increase in imports over the 12-month period October 2025 to September 2026 compared to the previous 12-month period include pipe for piling (up 88%) and heavy structural shapes (up 61%).

In September, the largest suppliers were South Korea (519kt) up 21% versus August), Brazil (349kt) down less than 1%, Mexico (267kt) up 5%), Canada (256kt) down 13%, and Japan (165kt) up 60%. Over the 12-month period October 2025 to September 2026, the largest suppliers were South Korea (3.9Mt) up 44% compared to the previous 12 months), Brazil (3.2Mt) down 21%, Canada (3.1Mt) down 40%, Mexico (2.2Mt) down 32%, and Vietnam (1.3Mt, up 22%).
