U.S. Steel said that due to the sharp decline in operating conditions caused by Covid-19, the company is considering suspending Lone Star steel pipe plant''s operations and laying off 600 employees.
The company said in a statement issued in early May that it will carry out the previously announced idle plan of some equipment and suspend related heat treatment and finishing operations.
U.S. Steel announced that its Lone Star in Illinois began to lay off employees last week and planned to idle all operations before the end of May.
U.S. Steel''s first-quarter earnings report showed that the company faced a loss of US$391 million.
