German carmaker Volkswagen''s Indian unit will recall 3.23 lakh diesel cars fitted with emission cheating software starting this month even as the government has decided to test all vehicles of all carmakers for similar devices and faulty products.

Mr Ambuj Sharma, additional secretary in the ministry of heavy industries, said that "Volkswagen has agreed to recall all the vehicles fitted with the faulty engine to fix and rectify the system so that it does not suffer from the emission issue. They will start the recall immediately, may be within this month they will start with different engines, different models, different time schedules."

The development comes after a government probe, conducted by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), found ''defeat device'' in the EA189 diesel engines that power several models under Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda brands.

Mr Sharma said the ministry will now examine all other car manufacturers in the country for faulty products.

He said that "In the next 3-6 months we will do that with all the car manufacturers and every model."

Volkswagen Group India said that it will first present its technical released solution to ministry of heavy industries and the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), the official testing agency that conducted the emission probe on Volkswagen vehicles.

The company in a statement said that "Once approved from the competent authorities, the respective brands of the Volkswagen Group in India will carry out necessary actions in a step-wise manner."

Earlier on Tuesday, officials in the ministry of heavy industries held a meeting with Volkswagen representatives. This is the second emission scandal detected in India after General Motors recalled nearly 1.14 lakh Tavera due to flouting of emission norms in 2013.

However, the Volkswagen recall in India will include approximately 198,500 cars from Volkswagen, 88,700 cars from KODA and 36,500 cars from Audi, sold since 2008 till the end of November 2015. These vehicles, across various models, are equipped with the EA189 diesel engines in 1.2-litre, 1.5-litre, 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre segments.
