There are several types of cast Carbon Steel available in the market. These steels are divided into different categories depending on the use they are intended for. They are classified into three main types, which are annealed, normalized and stainless steel. They can also be further subdivided into structural, machine manufacturing and alloy steels. The properties of these steels depend on the type of heat treatment and carbon content. In addition to that, their hardness values depend on the type of heat treatment.
The composition of cast Carbon Steel depends on its content of carbon. This alloying element is the most important one. The rest of the elements are trace amounts. Among these elements are silicon, manganese, and iron. Those with lower content of these elements are called low-alloy steels. High-quality cast Carbon Steels usually contain more than 0.5% carbon. They are known for their high strength, toughness, and low cost.
There are several methods of evaluating the strength and toughness of cast Carbon Steel. For instance, plane-strain fracture toughness is determined by the S-N curve. These data can be used in design equations. For fatigue, the S-N curve is a basic representation of the relationships between life and fatigue. Its life is related to the maximum stress applied. Constant-amplitude tests are used to determine the sensitivity of the material to fatigue.
Another way to assess the strength of a steel is through fracture toughness. There are several tests to measure toughness, including the Charpy V-notch impact test, the drop-weight test, and the dynamic tear test. Moreover, specialized procedures are used to evaluate plane-strain fracture toughness. Besides, the S-N curve provides data on the strength of the material. The S-N curve shows the relationship between the life of a fatigue specimen and the maximum applied stress.
There are different types of Carbon Steel. There are low-carbon and high-carbon steels. The difference between them lies in the amount of carbon in the steel. Medium-carbon steel contains less than 0.2 percent of carbon and high-carbon steel contains between 0.2% and 0.5 percent of carbon. The higher the carbon content, the greater the strength of the material. The latter is used for motors. In addition to the above mentioned uses, cast Carbon is also useful for other purposes.

The mechanical properties of Carbon steel are very sensitive to the temperature. During high temperatures, the material''s mechanical properties degrade and it leads to early failure. In addition, the steel is prone to oxidation, hydrogen damage, carbide instability and sulphite scaling. Its toughness is severely reduced at low temperatures. Therefore, special Low-temperature Steel is available to solve these problems. The alloying elements increase the toughness of a carbon steel casting.
