Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment’s China Solid Waste and Chemicals Management Bureau announced last week a new batch of import quotas of 7,970 tonnes for high grade Category Six copper scrap, down from the approved volume of 11,110 tonnes in the previous batch. This is expected to be the last issuance on copper scrap quotas for 2019 and more quotas for 2020 will be released before end December.
According to Tuesday’s notice from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment’s China Solid Waste and Chemicals Management Bureau, importers may receive another 9,844 tonnes of aluminium scrap through year’s end. Since the quota system began on July 1, regulators have authorized the import of 473,965 tonnes of aluminium scrap, 22,418 tonnes of steel scrap and 560,662 tonnes tons of copper scrap.
China instituted import quotas on scrap metal over the summer, hoping to use the quotas as a mechanism for ultimately weaning the Chinese economy off of scrap metal imports entirely.
