According to Jesus Seade, the Mexican Deputy Foreign Minister, the new agreement between Canada, the US and Mexico on steel and aluminum tariffs will increase the possibility that the US Congress will approve the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) before this summer.
The United States reached an agreement last Friday to end tariffs on steel and aluminum from Canada and Mexico, eliminating a major obstacle for the approval of a new North American trade pact by Congress.
The new agreement will not impose quotas of steel and aluminum from Mexico and Canada, and it would also eliminate the retaliation tariffs of the two neighboring countries on a wide range of products such as pork, beef and bourbon.
The agreement also aimed to prevent steel and aluminum dumped from China and other countries entering the US market through Mexico and Canada.
