The American Foundry Society (AFS) is calling on Congress to approve a package that will strengthen the U.S. economy and improve the nation''s infrastructure.
"Roads, bridges, rails, ports, airports, water and sewer pipes, the energy grid ¡ are the foundation of our country¡¯s jobs, quality of life, economic competitiveness, and national security. Yet the nation¡¯s infrastructure network, designed generations ago, is under-funded, poorly maintained, and inadequately designed to meet 21st century needs," AFS CEO Doug Kurkul wrote in a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, House Speaker Paul Ryan, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.
A similar letter was delivered to President Donald Trump.
AFS is urging the implementation of key policies, including a $1 trillion investment over 10 years for long-term infrastructure projects, reforms to streamline permitting and approval of large projects, and a requirement that the materials used to rebuild the nation''s infrastructure, including metal castings, are produced in the U.S.
"As the leading manufacturing association representing domestic metalcasters, we support passage of a balanced infrastructure investment package that will lift our nation¡¯s economy and improve the safety, reliability and efficiency of our nation¡¯s infrastructure network," Kurkul wrote.
