Local media reported that the government of South Korea has appealed a World Trade Organization November 2020 ruling that South Korea''s anti dumping duties on Japanese made stainless steel bars broke international trade rules and South Korea is to take corrective measures. A ruling on the appeal is unlikely to come anytime soon, now that the WTO''s appellate court is not functioning due to a lack of judges. The anti dumping measures will likely remain in place until a final WTO ruling is delivered.
This comes as Tokyo Steel filed complaints to the WTO in 2018, claiming the South Korean government was unreasonably imposing anti-dumping tariffs on Japanese products. South Korea has been charging additional tariffs of about 15 on stainless steel bars imports from Japan, India and Spain since 2004. The product is mainly used in automobiles and machine tools.
