While entire industries have been drowned by a sea of lower priced exports from China the heat treating industry has largely been immune. In North America, South America and Europe Chinese made furnaces are virtually unheard of along with Induction power supplies and control systems.
The reasons are of course numerous, the shipping distances involved, lack of local support and in many cases a lack of experience in building state of the art equipment. The only exception to this is commodity type products such as molybdenum and alloy components both of which enjoy a small but growing part of the market almost entirely due to their lower costs (at this point we will be very honest and say that there are certainly some quality providers of both in China). But what has always puzzled us is that with both of these products the largest part of the cost is the actual material costs as opposed to the labor or engineering costs so how can they be substantially cheaper?
Let¡¯s face it at the end of the day nickel is nickel and it would take a very stupid person to buy nickel at $4.00 a pound and sell it in the form of a cast base tray at $3.00/pound. We have never had reason to dwell on the differences but completely by accident we ran across an excellent article which explains the difference in pricing and even mentions stress relieving as an example. Read this and you will see how Chinese products can be so much cheaper. By the way the photos below show an alloy foundry we visited in China a couple of years back and a company we also visited in China which supplies moly to the worldwide market
