Ultraform Industries Inc., a metal forming company in Romeo, Mich., has taken delivery of its first Aida 400-ton servo press. Production is slated to begin in January 2016.

The servo can run forward and reverse without stopping and restarting, producing equal tonnage in both directions. It does not need the motor or a flywheel to run in 360-degree motions to produce parts. According to the company, this results in faster PPM when the motors are running at lower SPM (40 SPM with 90 PPM).

The press can run at 88 IPM but the servo can be programmed to slow down anywhere in the stroke before it starts the work, then throughout the work stroke it can remain running at 10 SPM, such as for a deep-drawn part.

The servo can help to eliminate die stations or entire dies, depending on the application. The company can program the press to move in reverse and re-hit the part a second time.
