Liberty Steel Newport, part of the global GFG Alliance, is playing a major role in reducing the UK’s reliance upon imported hot rolled coil, which is used extensively in the construction, automotive and pipe manufacturing.
This week, the plant is completing the first phase of a £15 million investment in new and upgraded equipment and will be installing advanced descaling machinery designed to improve the surface quality of the product. Additional automation will increase process efficiency, claims the company.
Operations director Tony Halbert is ‘greatly encouraged’ by progress so far, claiming that the investments will put the company in a stronger position to serve existing and new customers in the UK and overseas.
Work is continuing at Newport on the installation of an electric arc furnace and casters for liquid steelmaking and slab production, powered by renewable energy under Liberty’s GREENSTEEL strategy.
Equally pleased with the way things are going at Newport is Sanjeev Gupta, executive chairman of the GFG Alliance. “We’re looking forward to delivering our big ambitions for the site,” he said.
The Newport site was Liberty Steel’s first steel producing asset.
