FASTENER NEWS NOW posted an all-time high number of fastener news releases and items of interest in 2013. The readership also continued to grow on a daily basis from around the world. The promotion to “Enjoy your morning cup of coffee while reading the latest fastener news” was a hit! At the start of 2013, the number of new readers signing up were three to five a day, but starting in the Spring and continuing on to the present day the number of new readers registering and signing up for FASTENER NEWS NOW along with the American Fastener Journal (AFJ) magazine and the electronic fastener digital magazine the U.S. Fastener Report has more than tripled. Earlier this year we talked about our circulation in terms of filling up college football stadiums. We are not at the capacity of the “Horseshoe” at The Ohio State University yet; but we passed the Stanford Stadium capacity of 50,000. However, as I was reviewing all these new subscribers and readers I was noticing the different number of countries that they represented. My dad in retirement started to travel and I mentioned to him the Travelers Century Club for those individuals who have visited 100 countries or more. He reached and passed his goal of 100 countries before he died. So I thought, how about seeing how countries are represented in our readership. After doing a little bit of research I found that the number of independent countries varies due to the source. There is no one right answer. The United Nations (UN) states 192, most World Almanacs 193; our U.S. State Department recognizes 194 and other sources state 195 to 196. So I started by evaluating the number of countries by continent. We have readership in all of the North America (including all the fifty states and the Provinces of Canada), Central America and South America countries but not counting all the Caribbean Island nations. All of Europe is covered, Australia and most of all of Asia. The Middle East and the former Soviet Union countries are all well represented. Currently India is the fastest growing area. Africa is not well represented in the total number of countries with only a hand-full. The industrial nations and the faster growing third-world nations are all well represented. The holes in my list include of course Africa, the Oceana Islands of the Pacific and the Caribbean islands. I am two-thirds of the way to my goal of 195 countries, knowing some countries will never be represented, i.e. Cuba, but maybe I need to travel to some exotic island destinations to increase my numbers in the coming years. But back to the beginning, I am very thankful for the support and following this past year of our fastener publications and I look forward to continuing to provide the information you want to continue to improve your businesses.
