London Metal Exchange (LME) nickel prices climbed to US$11,040/ton on January 7th. The increase was guessed mainly due to the recent easing of the China-US trade disputes, which led to a stronger demand in the market. Besides, a policy from China also had an effect on the nickel price.
Chinese government has announced to cancel or reduce the subsidies for electric vehicles with a driving distance below 300 kilometers, and to set the subsidy amount based on the distance.
Therefore, the electric vehicle manufacturers in China will strengthen the development of cathode materials for high-nickel ternary batteries which needed the main materials of nickel cobalt manganese (NCM). It was said that nickel price will be pulled up by this policy because the demand for nickel will increase and the supply of nickel will be tighter than before.
