Tenaris, a Luxembourg company, said last Thursday that its Sault Ste. Marie seamless steel pipe plant in Ontario was cutting production by 25% due to market challenges.
The market was challenged by three main factors. First, in order to impose a 25% tariff on imported steel in the US, the import of energy tubular into Canada has surged. Second, Algoma Tubes’ export sales to the US decline. Third, the Canadian oil and gas market under export bottlenecks were facing challenges.
Tenaris Algoma Tubes was expected to temporary layoff of approximately 90 union employees as of December 15th, 2018. The plant will be suspended from December 15th to January 7th to adjust production.
