Founded in 1959 by David''s father Harry, Mill Steel is a leading carbon flat-roll distributor and processor based in Grand Rapids, Mich. Under David''s leadership, the company has experienced tremendous growth. A decade ago, it was ranked No. 45 in the Metal Center News Service Center Top 50 with four locations, 120 employees and annual sales around $185 million. Today, Mill Steel is No. 23 with six locations, 250 employees and triple the revenues at $575 million. In its most recent growth initiative, the company opened a 225,000-square-foot service center on the Ohio River in Jeffersonville, Ind., which complements its other major processing centers in Grand Rapids, Detroit and Birmingham, Ala.
Singling out one industry executive from the many that are qualified and deserving of recognition is a difficult task. It requires looking beyond the measurable metrics like sales and facilities to the less quantifiable attributes that define true leadership. If comments from his management team are any indication, David Samrick is one of those leaders with a magnetic personality that just naturally attracts respect and devotion from those around him. As Vice President of Sales Pam Heglund says: "We believe in the culture David has created. We couldn''t be where we are today if we weren''t who we are today. We are always striving to do better, and to be better. That culture creates a sense of closeness across all levels of our company."
As Samrick has been known to say, "family comes first." Fostering family-like bonds with employees—and by extension customers and suppliers—produces powerful results. It''s that type of leadership intangible that warrants Executive of the Year honors.
