Crude steel production for the 65 countries reporting to the Brussels-based World Steel Association totaled 134 million tons in September, a decrease of 0.1 percent from the same month the previous year. The year-to-date total of 1.2 billion tons was 2.1 percent more than in 2013.
The crude steel capacity utilization rate for the world in September hit 76.1 percent. That is 2.6 percentage points lower than the same month last year, but up 1.9 percentage points from August.
The U.S. produced 7.3 million tons of crude steel in September, a decrease of 0.1 percent compared to September 2013. Canada produced 1.0 million tons, up 6.9 percent. Mexico produced 1.6 million tons, a 3.8 percent increase over the prior year.
China’s crude steel production for September totaled 67.5 million tons, flat with 2013. Japan produced 9.2 million tons, a decrease of 0.5 percent. India produced 6.8 million tons, an increase of 2.5 percent. South Korea’s production of 5.7 million tons was 10.1 percent higher than September 2013.
In the EU, Germany produced 3.5 million tons, a decrease of 3.0 percent. Italy produced 2.2 million tons, up 0.7 percent. France produced 1.2 million tons, down 0.5 percent. Turkey’s crude steel production for September was 2.9 million tons, a decrease of 3.1 percent.
