According to a recent report the global demand for flat rolled and extruded aluminium products is expected to rise by 5 to 6% CAGR between 2016 and 2020, mostly due to increased demand from the transportation sector. Demand for automotive aluminium sheet alone will be the highest in North America (up to 25 to 30%t CAGR), followed by Europe, and East Asia ( 10-12 % CAGR), increasing from around 1.2 million tonnes in 2015 to around 2.4 million tonnes in 2020, marking an average global growth of ~ 15% CAGR. Germany, which has remained an automobile manufacturing hub and one of the top car exporting countries since years now, has been importing aluminium plates, sheets and strips in large volumes.

Germany imported 0.74 million tonnes of aluminium plates, sheets and strips in 2014. The figure surged 14.8 per cent to touch 0.85 million tonnes in 2015. In 2016, the country is estimated to import 0.93 million tonnes of the aluminium semi-finished products, up 9.41 per cent from 2015 and 25.6 per cent from 2014.

Value-wise, Germany''s total aluminium plates, sheets and strips imports reached USD 2.89 billion in 2014. The figure increased 2.76 per cent year-on-year to total at USD 2.97 billion in 2015. In 2016, the total value of aluminium plates, sheets and strips imports is estimated to reach USD 3.07 billion, up 3.36 per cent YoY.

Lightweight materials, especially aluminium and polymer composites, have become a crucial element for product designing across several industries and in the automotive sector, shaving many kilograms, which translates into lower fuel consumption, reduced CO2 emissions and improved vehicle performance. As OEMs increasingly take to using lighter materials like aluminium there is growing demand for high-end aluminium plates, sheets and strips. Aside automobile manufacture, these rolled aluminium products find use in other sectors as well.

In recent years, many Japanese and German automakers have been shifting their production base to the US in order to reduce costs. This may adversely affect Germany''s import potential for aluminium sheets. Plus, the exit of Britain (a big export makrket for Geran car ompanies) from the European Union is also likley to dampen Germany''s auto sales. This too could have a top-down negative impact on the country''s automobile manufacturing sector and import of raw materials including aluminium sheets.

However, since rolled aluminium products like aluminium plates, sheets, and strips also find major use in packaging industry, the overall import is not going to be affected significantly in the long term. - The 18th China£¨Guangzhou£©Int¡¯l Sheet metal machinery,Forging, Stamping and Setting Equipment Exhibition
